“I am 61 and my cholesterol numbers have been overall in the 240 – 250 range. My HDL was always above range, good. But my LDL hovers around 162, not good. The book gives 10 things to do, 9 diet related, one is exercise. One of the last sentences in the book the author says to do whatever steps you can, realizing that striving for perfection can be the enemy of the good. I find about 5 of the steps easy for me to incorporate into my day. Even at that, after 4 weeks on my 5 step program, my cholesterol went down from 243 to 215–to me, that was good news. My LDL went down to 123, the lowest ever. Even my TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) was in range too (2.4)…usually, that’s about 5.2, even on thyroid meds (since this year a new med, ugh) it was still out of range. My triglycerides, VLDL, etc., are all in range. We all have issues related and not related to our cholesterol issues, we are all a mixed bag of health concerns. If you are like me, on one diet or another, you may not like that you have to eat beans, flaxseeds and other healthy but highly-caloric foods DAILY. You have to set your priorities as you see fit. I will concentrate now in getting my cholesterol down and eating almonds, flaxseeds, almond butter, etc, and not stress out about calories…if in months ahead I can get my numbers down even further. I think this book is worth reading if you are concerned about high cholesterol, it can’t hurt.”
